Workshop #2 – Complete!
The November workshop was small, but absolutely a blast! Due to Hurricane Ian, we didn’t have a great turnout. However, the young women in attendance blew me away. They were attentive, interested, and great listeners. It was great to have some two-on-one mentorship time with them, and share my experiences on a more personal level. We had the wonderful Amanda Grossman as our guest speaker, a Certified Flight Instructor at Naples Air Center! Our event was at RexAir flight training center, giving us easy access to watch the planes take off and land at Naples Municipal Airport. They even had a Cessna and a Jet that we could walk around…

Hurricane Ian Causing Setbacks
On Wednesday, September 28th, Hurricane Ian hit the SouthWest Florida area, devastating Fort Myers, Sanibel, Punta Gorda, Naples, and Bonita. Due to the impact and damage of Ian, we have decided to post-pone the second Girls Who Soar workshop to December 3rd, 2022. We are wishing everyone good health and safety during this stressful time. As of right now, the November 12th workshop is still happening at RexAir in Naples, FL.

Workshop #1 – Complete!
The workshop for Saturday, September 10th is complete! We had 10 girls in attendance, which was great considering the stormy weather. It was such an exciting session, and I’m so proud of all of the girls for pushing through the day and learning with me! We build wing ribs, made a flight plan, called WX BRIEF, learned about the phonetic alphabet, made keychains, and so much more. We also had two incredible speakers – Katie Truedson and Cheryl Lynn – that talked to the girls about recreational and career flying. I’m so grateful for everyone who came out for this workshop.

The Petition
In the past, Girl Scouts has encouraged programs that introduce girls to a variety of career fields, like medicine or law. Several of these careers have been made into exploratory patches where girls can learn more about the career and see if it is something they might be interested in. In the Boy Scouts of America’s Aviation patch, they even encourage scouts to fly in a small aircraft as a part of the badge requirements. On the other hand, Girl Scouts has guidelines prohibiting the use of privately owned aircraft in affiliation with Girl Scouts for any purpose, including privately owned aircraft.
